Endorsement Criteria

San Francisco (SF) Technology Democrats endorses Democratic candidates and local or state propositions that meet our endorsement criteria.  

How endorsements of candidates are made

The purpose of the SF Technology Democrats’ endorsement is to elect candidates and support propositions that promote  policy positions to advance government transparency, open data, technology innovation, civic technology, economic development, accessibility, job creation, and democratic participation.

Candidate Endorsement Eligibility

  • Candidate for elected office must be a registered democrat.

  • Candidate must demonstrate community support and viability to win.

  • Candidate must demonstrate support of federal, state, or local efforts to advance civic innovation, government transparency, open data, and technology innovation.

  • Candidate must demonstrate support of federal, state or local efforts to increase economic development, accessibility, job creation, and democratic participation.

Proposition Endorsement Eligibility

  • Proposition must demonstrate community support and viability to win.

  • Proposition must seek to advance civic innovation, government transparency, open data, electronic privacy, and technology innovation; or

  • Proposition must seek to increase economic development, accessibility, job creation, and democratic participation.

Endorsement Process

  • Executive Board of SF Technology Democrats interviews candidates or proponents of propositions on the phone or in person.

  • If a candidate has been elected before, SF Technology Democrats researches the candidate’s voting record.

  • Once the endorsement recommendation is made, the Endorsements Committee shall communicates the slate to members for affirmation, and communicates the results to candidates in writing.

Endorsement Criteria

  • Issues that the candidate supports or opposes.

  • Viability of the campaign, such as money raised and name recognition.

  • Whether the current officeholder is seeking re-election.

  • Policy positions on issues which affect civic innovation, government transparency, open data, economic development, accessibility, job creation, and democratic participation.

Levels of Endorsement

SF Technology Democrats gives one of the following levels of support to each candidate:

  • Letters of endorsement

  • Financial contributions including fundraising and supportive digital and print media purchases.

  • Support campaign technology including Social Media, data analysis, and digital media development.

  • Host campaign events including forums, social events, and other special events.
